So I was glad of my conservative approach to upgrading, and indeed of keeping older versions around.Ĭurrently, I'm still working mainly in Finale 2005b (on Win98), though I've started using 2006c on Vista 64 for rendering Finale 2005 scores to WAV files. Sure, it's fine with Vista, prints great in Win98 if you have a Postscript printer, but not if, like me, you use HP DeskJet inkjet printers! That's when I discovered that under Windows 98, on PCL printers, 2006 doesn't reproduce brackets, slurs, ties and some other curves. I was at the very point of moving from 2005 to 2006 a just over a year ago, after my month-long "transition", when I tried to print a piece I'd been working on. To be fair, I normally only have one fully-installed active version of Finale at a time, but I generally take a month or more to transition between versions, backing up my old installation into a ZIP file (which I can quickly unpack if/when I need it) which then gets archived alongside everything else in my weekly DVD backups. If Finale had proper "save as older version" support (and I don't mean just MusicXML import/export), these reasons would cease to matter. ![]() The biggest two reasons to keep older versions are:ġ) Some things that used to work in old versions get broken in later versions - and if it ain't broke, don't fix itĢ) You cannot save from a newer version to and older one, but you can in reverse - so always work in the oldest version that does everything you want I'm one of quiet a few forum members who've not only kept old versions, but elected to keep on using them while newer versions sit on my shelf. If you use Finale all by your lonesome, there is probably no need for multiple versions. Other people usually keep multiple versions "just in case".
